Position Description

As an apprentice, the individual will be learning and gaining practical experience under the guidance of experienced and qualified Journeyperson R/AC Mechanic professional. The primary responsibilities will involve the installation, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of various cooling and heating systems.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reading and Interpretation:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, or other specifications related to refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
  • Measure and lay out reference points for system installation.

Installation and Assembly:

  • Assemble and install refrigeration or air conditioning components, including motors, controls, gauges, valves, circulating pumps, condensers, humidifiers, evaporators, and compressors.
  • Use hand and power tools to complete installations.

Piping and Welding:

  • Measure and cut piping.
  • Connect piping using welding and brazing equipment.

System Testing and Maintenance:

  • Startup systems and test for leaks using appropriate testing devices.
  • Recharge systems with refrigerant.
  • Check and test regulators, calibrate systems, and perform routine maintenance or servicing.
  • Troubleshooting and Repairs:
  • Troubleshoot and correct system problems.
  • Repair and replace parts and components for entire refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation, or heat pump systems.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Prepare work estimates for clients.
  • Handle material manually.
  • Work in various environments, including retail and servicing establishments and industrial settings
  • Comply with all regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to the operations including occupational health and safety, environmental, drug and alcohol, Code of Conduct and Ethics, Serco Management System and quality.
  • Other related duties relevant to this position as may be required.

The wage rate will be commensurate with level of training verified by the Department of Advance Education, skills, and Labour Industrial Training Section".

Qualifications

  • ENTRY-LEVEL TRAINING (PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS)offered by both public and private post-secondary training institutions; includes theoretical and practical knowledge in specific trades areas; and involves formal, classroom-based instruction lasting approximately 9 months (for most programs).
  • Sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Serco
  • Register to become an Apprentice with the NL Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Division
  • Complete in-school training when required.
  • Possession of a valid NL Class 5 driver’s license is required supported by a copy of Drivers Abstract.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an Enhanced Reliability security clearance is required. May be required to upgrade to Secret Level II (dependent upon customer’s security requirements).
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain and maintain a Ramp Defensive Driving Course (DND/RDDC) certification to operate vehicles on the airfield is required.
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to pass pre-employment Drug and Alcohol Test
