As the Royal Canadian Air Forces’ prime service provider at 5 Wing Goose Bay, Labrador, our team delivers comprehensive air operations, emergency services, logistics and engineering expertise to the Department of National Defence. We work on behalf of DND’s “no fail” mission at Goose Bay: supporting NORAD operations for the projection of air power on the north and northeast coasts of Canada, while supporting military training for the Canadian Armed Forces, Allies and NORAD. 5 Wing Goose Bay provides effective training facilities, adaptable infrastructures, and a unique, austere, and challenging training location.   Currently, Serco Canada has over 1,200 employees across four provinces, including a strong and growing Indigenous workforce.

You will be part of a team that works closely with the military customer and other Serco teams to deliver quality and efficient services to DND. SUMMARY/PURPOSE:

  • Lay out, install, repair, maintain, modify, inspect and test fire protection systems in a variety of buildings and settings. Including reading and interpreting engineered drawings, installing hangers and clamps to support the piping system, preparing the pipe, joining pipe using a variety of methods, installing associated equipment including cross-connection control, as well as maintaining, inspecting and testing all types of fire protection systems.
  • This role requires expertise in handling all types of fire protection systems, including wet, dry, pre-action, foam, deluge, standpipe, clean agent, carbon dioxide, hybrid, antifreeze, and chemical fire suppression system.
  • Ensure compliance with all Serco Canada Inc. policies and procedures, including but not limited to Code of Conduct and Ethics, Serco Management System, PDR’s, etc.  

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Layout and Installation: Plan and execute the layout and installation of fire protection systems according to specifications and building codes. Read and interpret specifications, scopes, sketches, or drawings to determine the layout of sprinkler systems.
  • Repair and Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance and repairs on existing fire protection systems to ensure optimal functionality and compliance with safety standards.
  • Cut, thread, assemble and bond pipes and tubes to ensure they pass fire safety inspections.
  • Replace defective and outdated sprinklers.
  • Design overhead sprinkler and hose systems, fire mains, underground systems, and underground closed valves.
  • Solder and weld pipes, tubes and fittings designed for sprinkler systems.
  • Modification: Modify existing fire protection systems to meet updated safety regulations or building requirements.
  • Testing: Conduct thorough testing of fire protection systems to verify proper operation and compliance with safety standards.
  • System Types: Work with a variety of fire protection systems, including wet, dry, pre-action, standpipe, clean agent, carbon dioxide, and dry chemical systems.
  • Compliance: Ensure all work complies with local, provincial, and national fire safety regulations and standards.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, modifications, and tests performed.
  • Other related duties relevant to this position as may be required.
  • Comply with all regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to the operations including occupational health and safety, environmental, drug and alcohol, and quality.

Qualifications

EDUCATION /CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Red Seal Interprovincial Sprinkler Fitter.  
  • Possession of a valid NL Class 5 driver’s license is required.  
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Secret Level II security clearance is required.   
  • Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening test.  
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain and maintain a Ramp Defensive Driving Course (DND/RDDC) certification to operate vehicles on the airfield is required.  
  • Provide a copy of drivers abstract. 

 

KNOWLEDGE and EXPERENCE

  • Proven experience as a Sprinkler Fitter or in a similar role.
  • In-depth knowledge of fire protection systems and safety standards.
  • Experience in installing and maintaining sprinkler fixtures and systems. 
  • Proficiency and knowledge in using power tools. 
  • Experience threading pipes for assembly. 
  • Understanding of basic mathematical concepts. 
  • Familiarity with mechanical systems. 
  • Sufficient computer/mobile device skills to support MS suite, electronic timekeeping and work order entries.  
  • Skills related to maintenance tasks.
