Position Description

Are you seeking an opportunity in a fast paced, team based, multi-disciplined environment, while collaborating with others and supporting the navy, coast guard, and commercial customer, Serco has a great opportunity for you! This position is located in Victoria, British Columbia.

 

This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain/maintain a Canadian Security Clearance (Reliability / Controlled Good or higher).

 

As a weld engineering specialist you will engage with the design/engineering and production teams and establish welding techniques and practices for executing welding work in a Shipyard. The programs may involve new vessel construction, refits and in service support of marine platforms such as ships and submarines.

 

You will participate in performing design integration, coordination inputs from various naval architectural and other engineering disciplines, such as marine engineering and structures, into balanced, closed solution designs to establish principal characteristics and design features such as length, beam, depth, draft, displacement, speed and other performance parameters. 

 

In this role, you will:

  • Apply metallurgical principles to determine how metal properties react to one another, establish safe combinations of metal, and identify the right welding technique/ positions for welding and metal fabrication.
  • Provide advice to Engineering teams on all aspects related to welding.
  • Ensure primary consideration is given to Health, Safety, and Environmental issues in all activities undertaken within areas of responsibility.
  • Have a good knowledge of and be easily able to understand the relevant welding codes to be able to identify the process and materials for ensuring the metal components and techniques create a high-quality component or product to full the requirements set out in the specified codes.
  • In an office environment, your responsibilities will include:
    • Reviewing welding project specification
    • Providing welding material recommendations.
    • Developing new welding procedure specifications.
    • Creating welding procedure data sheets.
  • Work both inside and outside ships and submarines undergoing refit. This may involve performing inspections on a scaffolding, occasional entry in to confined spaces such as tanks, climbing ladders and exposure to welding fumes.

Additional responsibilities:

 

You could also be assigned to a ship design project to support marine engineering tasks, where you will work under the guidance of a Ship Design Manager or a Senior Marine Engineer at Serco for designing ships or ship systems, or embedded in a client’s team working under their supervisor. This role wll involve:  

 

Applying  basic knowledge of marine and mechanical engineering to perform routine analyses and prepare basic engineering system designs such as fluid systems, propulsion systems, auxiliary systems, HVAC systems, and electrical systems in support of the design of ships, crafts, and other floating structures deliverables. You will receive technical guidance and training from the more experienced technical staff in the program and functional manager.

 

Work in a program involving design of ships systems or an In-Service Support program of a ship or submarine where you will be required to develop engineering specifications for refits and modernisation as well as provide engineering support for resolving queries from the client’s production teams. 

 

Support the development of engineering change specifications and respond to queries from the production floor that require an engineering assessment during the refits of ships or submarines.

 

Perform Logistics Support Analysis under the guidance of ILS Manager, if assigned to this task. 

 

In the marine engineering support role, you may be assigned any of the following tasks:

  • Apply basic mechanical and marine engineering knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas
    Participate in working with clients to formulate requirements and specifications and then develop these into concept designs, system functional and detailed designs.
  • Participate in developing drawings.
  • Participate in marine engineering analysis and design for new ship and submarine systems designs, by performing Class Rule calculations and detail design of propulsion shafting and bearings, auxiliary/ fluid systems design, auxiliary equipment selection, component and pipe sizing, pressure drops and flow calculations, pump selection and material selection.
  • Participate in design studies and developing reports on various areas in marine engineering discipline such as exhaust system back pressure calculations, EEDI calculations, etc.
  • Participate in design of salient systems such as bilge and ballast system, fire-main system, compressed air system, seawater and freshwater cooling system, fuel oil system, prewetting system etc.
  • Participate in developing Technical Product specifications for various system components, standalone systems and mechanical equipment for procurement.
  • Participate in the review of and determination of the Vendor supplied Information for suitability of purpose.
  • Participate in feasibility studies and developing whitepapers for procuring standalone systems.
  • Participate in developing machinery arrangements, analyzing requirements for area and volume, and maintenance envelopes, illustrating functional allocation of spaces considering location and adjacency constraints.
  • Participate in option and trade off studies including access to various components for the operation and maintainers.
  • Participate in developing equipment shipping and unshipping routes.
  • Participate in developing Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Inputs/ Outputs signal list, functionalities, and logic.
  • Participate in performing piping system calculations using software such as PIPENET, PIPEFLOW or PIPE-FLO.
  • Participate in analysis and selection of resilient mounts for various equipment in the machinery spaces.
  • Provide engineering solutions for repairing defects identified during system surveys/ inspections.
  • Identify appropriate non-destructive testing methods to be applied to identify defects in systems for pre-repair surveys and post repair QC.
  • Assist with the review of design proposals and specifications as well as developing the build specifications for mechanical systems and propulsion system.
  • Participate in performing risk analysis of functional design and impact of changes to major systems.
  • Participate in functional review of detailed design 3D models and final acceptance.
  • Participate in scheduled project review sessions and meetings with representatives from other engineering disciplines and customers on technical and engineering issues.
  • Ensure primary consideration is given to Health, Safety, and Environmental issues in all activities undertaken within areas of responsibility.
  • Assist in preparing documentation, reports, and project plans to describe activities planned and accomplished, status reports, letters, memoranda, messages, and contact reports.
  • Assist in development and validation of design and engineering requirements, preparation of specifications, and provide inputs to technical reports and presentations.
  • Assist with preparation and presentation of formal briefings and staff seminars.
  • Visit marine vessels in a shipyard or during operations for ship checks, surveys,  testing and trials.
  • Comply with all corporate policies and procedures, including quality assurance and security proceed.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or marine engineering or related Engineering field such as Ocean Engineering, or equivalent in training and 0-2 years of applicable experience. (In some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 4 years applicable work experience)
  • A minimum of 4 years experience in the interpretation of engineering drawings including welding symbols and work with welding related codes and standards (i.e. ASME, CSA, ISO, AWS).
  • Must be eligible to obtain a Reliability Level Clearance prior to employment. (Canadian Citizen / Permanent Resident Status is required.)
  • Must be eligible for a Level 1 CSA W178.0 Welding Inspector or equivalent. 
  • Must have a NDT certificate. 
  • Experience with site shutdowns, ship construction, ship refits and ship repairs is required.
  • Demonstrate continuing education courses over the past employment
  • Travel up to 10% may be required

Additional desired experience and skills:

  • Possessing a Professional Engineer’s designation or registered as EIT is considered an asset.
  • Experience in a welding Quality Control or Quality Assurance role.
  • Experience with developing Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
  • CWB Welding Inspector 
  • Operational experience as a sea going engineer may be considered an asset
  • Experience with ship checks, ship visits and surveys and shipyard Design Reviews would be considered an asset.
  • Prior co-op term, internship or experience in Marine industry, Oil and Gas, Department of National Defence, Department of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (Canadian Coastguard), heavy engineering industry/ field jobs would be considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of metallurgy and welding of a wide variety of metals (e.g. steels, copper, aluminum, cast iron, and stainless metals)
  • Knowledge of types of defects in systems normally seen on marine vessels
  • Knowledge behavior of materials used in marine systems and materials under load under environmental conditions
  • General knowledge about the principles of operation of a submarine, its design/ layout, materials used, and types of systems in it is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of layout spaces and relationships
  • Knowledge of material safety data sheets (MSDS)
  • Knowledge of welding specifications
  • Knowledge of all types of welding rods and related fluxes and products
  • Layout/fit up principles and practices
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings
  • Ablity ro develop CAD sketches of weld configuration and system diagrams
  • Ability to use small office equipment and computers
  • Knowledge of welding codes and standards
  • Going on-board vessels in dock for conducting inspections, which may require climbing ladders and scaffoldings
